Here's another random Fannish 50 column and this one is about (surprise, surprise) hockey. It's one of my favorite days of the hockey year- the annual NHL Draft Lottery.

For many years, the drawing had been done in secret and then two years ago, ESPN effed up throwing to commercial break by knocking out a team that hadn't even been knocked out yet, and everybody screamed fake, so now they do it live.

And it is even more compelling now to watch it play out in real time. The group of 16 non-playoff teams is on the board in order of finish. Teams at the top (Vancouver wound up last, so they're first on the board) get the best odds. Each team is assigned a series of four two-digit numbers by the computer and there are roughly a thousand combinations possible. These numbers are on ping pong balls that are randomly spit out by a machine as we watch. So when the first ping pong ball comes out, all teams without that number come off the board, same with the second, third, etc. There are two draws.

There is some drama at the end as to who gets the first overall pick, but for the life of me I can't remember it right now (I'll edit it later tonight). Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly does get to do his card-flipping thing before it, so that's cool and brings a sense of historical continuity for geeks like me who watch every year.

There's always an interview with the number one projected pick and usually one with the winners, so it does pad out the time. It is an event after all.

There are a couple of rules. Teams cannot move up more than 10 spots, so if you're favorite is 12-16, you won't be getting the number one overall pick anyway. Also, a team cannot "win" the lottery for more than two years in a five year span.

Here's a fun game you can play if you'd like to see how things shake out, brought to you by the folks at Tankathon.

The lottery is tonight broadcast on ESPN, SN, TVAS at 6pm CDT.

Where has the time gone

I can't believe that four months (and a day) have already passed in 2026. Part of me wants to put on the brakes and the other part of me wants to speed through the next two years eight months and eighteen days (but who's counting).

I wrote a thing. Strange Mercies - Desert Hearts - Cay Rivvers/Vivian Bell. It's angsty

Mixed bag in the PWHL playoffs today. Montreal lost to Minnesota (boo.) But beloved Ottawa turned the tide and tied things up in their series against Boston (yay!) Now I have to wait until Tuesday for the next game.

The Blues minor league team is doing very well in their playoff series, but they still have a horrible human being employed by the team so although I'm happy for most of the players and the coach, I still feel like I can't outright root for them because of this awful person. I'm hoping that scouts from other teams will see him play and decide they need to have him so we can scuttle him off during the off-season. (He's not officially under contract with the Blues like many of the other players, but at the same time, I would rather he just not be there at all.)

Lots of things to look forward to this week- I have a friend visiting from Chicago tomorrow, draft lottery on Tuesday (which you will hear all about), choir on Thursday, and probably shopping with my nephew for tools one day this week.

That's all I've got for now. See you all tomorrow!

On Friday, Mr Cee and I travelled to Bermondsey in London to visit the Young V&A Museum to see their exhibition all about Aardman Animations. There had been issues with the tube trains all week (a series of strikes), but fortunately, we could easily get to the museum by train to London Bridge and a bus from there took us almost to the door.

The museum is aimed at families and young children with lots of hands-on activities, but it was interesting to see that most of the people who were visiting the exhibition were nearer to our age *g*.  Founded by Peter Lord and David Sproxton, Aardman Animations has been around since the early 1970s. They began with stop-motion animations on a children's TV programme created for deaf children, called Vision On, and the birth of their first cute Plasticine (modelling clay) animated character, Morph. Their work has extended into commercials, short films, music videos (including the famous Sledgehammer video with Peter Gabriel), and into full-length animated (and extremely successful) films with memorable characters such as Wallace and Gromit and Shaun the Sheep.

Under the cut for examples of the processes involved in producing clay-based characters, animation and lots of models!

There was so much more than I've included here, including the chance to make your own stop-motion clip, film yourself as an animation guide and play around with lighting a scene (and more).  It was well worth a visit. The exhibition will finish in November this year, and if you buy a ticket, you get free access if you want to go back to see it again.

So, I've hit the point on a work in progress where I gave up and created my usual table at the bottom of the file, the one I refer to as 'Oh, fuck, this is a novel.'  Then I ended up discussing it in a couple Discord servers, so I'm going to post it here, in case it's helpful to anyone else.

When I was writing the first story that turned into a novel on me (Sirocco), I eventually started loosing track of threads and plot points. So I put a table at the end (i.e., theoretically right under whatever I was writing).  It's very straightforward:

Scene:  Number
Pages: Where in the doc?
Characters:  Who's in this scene? If I'm trying to stick to, or vary, POVs, I add POV to the notes, too.
Major points:  Quick synopsis and, in this case, what plot points have made it onto the page so far.

I got desperate tracking everything in Sirocco, and this is what worked for me.  Now I do it anytime a fic gets so long that it's giving me trouble.

Oh, I forgot one part:  This is also a good way to keep track of details you know need to still go in!  Sometimes, my last three or four rows are stuff that needs to occur and which characters need to be there.

Anyway, hope the idea helps someone!

That's A Relief!

Dropping in to report that my beloved Ottawa Charge have seized the last remaining playoff spot.

WOO HOO!

At last! I won't have to wait to 2027 for some hockey playoffs to look forward to.

I ended up going to see Hadestown with L while it was touring SF. I heard from her last year that she wanted to see it, so as soon as dates in SF popped up – I apparently get all these live performances ads now on Insta, after getting Ed Gamble tickets – I texted her, and she got two tickets, intending it to be for RH and herself. But I told her that if it did not work out for him to go (because at the time he lived in Napa, and it would’ve been a long drive on a weeknight), I was happy to be her plan B, and that’s what happened. The show and the experience, with marked spoilers )

So, I’m glad I ended up going to see it with L. I would not have bestirred myself on my own, but listening to / watching my favorite songs from the show on YouTube, I can tell I got stuff out of the live experience that I would not have gotten otherwise, and also, I’m glad I got to see this particular Hades. And L is the perfect musical theater buddy – she likes discussing stuff and knows more than me, and in this case there was also the shared interest in Greek myth (which is what we had with the Harry Potter play, too). B would’ve absolutely hated every aspect of it, from the crowd to the jazz to the singing, which all three of us agreed on, heh.

Oh, right, and when we came home, since we were talking about how much I like bass voices, I showed L some Tim Foust videos (which [personal profile] aletheiafelinea introduced me to back in the day), like Champagne Taste (On a Beer Budget) and Long Black Train , and the Home Free sea shanties.

Taskmaster s21e03 – I like Kumail’s shirt, with the white o white design. And Amy’s polka dot pinafore thing is very cute, too. Spoilers )

Joanna is the podcast guest, and she talks at the same density and speed as on the show, with Ed just sort of occasionally putting in a sentence or two XD Slight spoilers? ) Anyway, that was a ton of fun, and that was one I made a point of watching on YouTube rather than listening to, because I wanted to watch Joanna light up with laughter, and Ed’s expression as she just kept talking over him. What an absolute delight she is XD

Hugo nominations are out! Category by category thoughts )

And I should take this opportunity to finally write down my Cinder House thoughts. I read it, what, during my trip to Arizona, I think, and that’s been 6 weeks.

4. Freya Marske, Cinder House – I liked it a lot! I was not super swayed when I heard the premise – I have no particular devotion to Cinderella retellings, and ghost stories aren’t really my genre, and I wasn’t sure how this premise would play to what I’ve heretofore seen of Freya’s strengths as a writer in both pro and fanfic, but it’s just a really good book. More, with spoilers )

*

At some point I should also catch up on another 6 months of Elis & John Radio X shows, and a ~2 months worth of current E&J and adjacent things like How Do You Cope (newly returned) and John making appearances on other podcasts to promote Thirst, but that'll need to wait. (I have preordered a signed copy of Thirst, but how I'm going to get to read it before I see [personal profile] cafemassolit whose house it's being shipped to is still unclear...

A lovely sunny outing with tulips!

It has been a gloriously sunny day today with clear skies and a temperature of 20ºC/68ºF, which was perfect for an outing to a tulip festival about an hour's drive away.

Tulley's Tulip Fest runs for about three weeks each year and is a celebration of beautiful tulips. This week is the peak time to see them, and they have 1.5 million tulips with over 120 different varieties on show. It was lovely to enjoy them in the sunshine today.

This is one of two fields covered in rows and rows of gorgeous colour. Under the cut for giant tulips, floating tulips, windmills, butterflies and unicorns...

There were lots of opportunities to buy from vendors selling food, including Dutch specialities such as bitterballen, pancakes and stroopwaffles, but also lots of street food. We ended up having a delicious, freshly cooked wood-fired pizza for lunch before heading home.

PWHL Ottawa didn't get it done in 60 today which means Saturday's game against Toronto will be for a playoff spot (Ottawa just needs a point to make it). I think they enjoy doing this to me because it seems to go down to the wire every year. I'm hoping they'll pull it out because I've got enough of the lesser of two evils in the NHL world and I really just want a team to root for.

Quiet day at work today. My nephew is coming in for an interview next week. I talked him into getting into this industry, might as well try to get him a job while I'm here. He's a good kid and I think they'll like him.

We got a call from the hospital before I left for work this morning to get my aunt from the ER. She wakes up in a panic and instead of calling us, she calls the paramedics. So my mom went and got her. I think it's a blessing in disguise since mom was fretting about taking her to visit nursing homes tomorrow. It's hard to see but my aunt can't live on her own anymore. I may need to take off in another week or so to help with the moving.

We watched the most recent part of "The Count of Monte Cristo" tonight. It's such fun.

That's all I've got for now. See you all tomorrow!
