flash writing game: first lines

Since a couple people in the story_works discord seemed to like the idea, I'm reviving this old writing game for anyone who wants to participate! 

Here's how it works: I'm going to post a grab-bag of first sentences from my own posted fic, sans context. Anyone who wants to can then use one (or more) of them as a line starter to write a whole new fic, of any length, in any fandom. Drop me a link or just post your new story in the comments, whatever you prefer. 

These first sentences are verbatim as posted, but if you get inspired with something that requires you to swap out a pronoun or character name, go for it. :)
