Wondered why I woke up with this headache, and then I saw that the window thing on my a/c unit in the kitchen popped out of place during the night so there had just been wildfire-polluted air freely flowing into the house for an unknown length of time. Very cool and convenient. Gonna be another super productive day.
Friday Five on Saturday
Sep. 15th, 2018 03:07 pm1. Have you ever experienced a hurricane firsthand?
No.
2. Have you ever experienced outside heat over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees C)?
Oh, sure. In Vegas, in Seattle, maybe in Chicago though I don't remember specific three-digit days there. I'm sure it'll be happening more in this part of California in the future too. It's miserable.
3. When and where was the coldest temperature you have ever experienced?
In Chicago it would get pretty close to zero (F) in the winter. According to timeanddate.com, it never cracked below zero when I lived there, though it was often below freezing. That was the worst too! I'm not sure which was more the worst, the winter or the summer.
4. Is your household prepared for a possible power outage of two to seven days?
Hrrm. Are we talking just power, or water and power? I actually think we'd be good, although if it was a whole seven days we sure wouldn't be happy. By then we'd have just gone to stay somewhere else, though, assuming this wasn't an apocalyptic kind of disaster.
5. Do you have a go bag?
Oh yeah. Putting together go-bags is kind of relaxing for me. I should go around and update all that stuff, though, because it has been a while since I did any maintenance on our emergency shit, and just now I was thinking "what kind of thing would we exactly need to evacuate from in this part of the country anyway" and then I remembered about fire. On that note, I should also get the tree trimmers out here while it's the cool season.
fire, water, earth, and air
Oct. 19th, 2017 03:21 pmThe fires hit not two weeks after the Las Vegas massacre, and my partner is still dealing with the emotional fallout of that happening in her hometown as we deal with the scope of the new disaster here in my home. Nearly 60 dead there, 41 dead (counted so far, but it'll go up as missing people's remains are found) and countless homeless here.
I came in to do a travelogue, but -- I'm tired from a week and a half of breathing through my Vogmask and grieving for this wildfire that's already deadlier than the devastating Oakland Hills fire. I'm tired from three weeks of nobody appearing to really, like, notice the deadliest act of mass violence on American soil since 9/11, and the toll that that indifference has had on the person closest to me. We're also both constantly triggered right now from all the Weinstein coverage. I haven't been getting out of the house much since the smoke came in, and my chest hurts. At least we're getting a little rain in the region today, bringing some relief. But next week there's another heat wave coming. Thank god I finally caved and bought an air conditioner this summer.
