Jul. 26th, 2021 05:51 pmHere's a little zygote of a Loki story I put up on tumblr earlier today. It started because of a joke someone made on discord about how Boastful Loki had been the only Loki who fucked Iron Man and Captain America, and then I thought of a cute sweet way to make it a Lokius thing, and then I followed the cute sweet idea to its logical conclusion and it turned out to be really sad, which I suppose is in keeping with the show. (It's not a happy musical, Little Sally.)
So, Loki heads down to Midgard about halfway through Thor 1 planning to do his little extremely Shakespearean villain turn, where he will tell Thor that Odin is dead and Thor can never return.
But he gets a little sidetracked. Maybe subconsciously he’s trying to put off this crucial act of betrayal, while he still has a chance to step back. Then again, maybe he’s just drawn in by the inexplicable architecture. Midgard has only ever been a spot for day trips and pranks. he is a curious god.
He walks around the streets of Puente Antiguo, New Mexico, looking at all the atomic-age desert retro, contemplating this place where he’s about to abandon his brother forever. He follows a sloping neon sign into a 24-hour diner, where he meets a kind, clever, impishly curious college professor with enchanting blue eyes. they talk until sunrise about everything; faith, free will, humanity, the meaning of life.
Loki feels a new sense of purpose infuse him and the burden of his resentments beginning to lift away. He chooses to go find his brother and tell him the truth and begin forging a peaceful way forward, and the TVA shows up and arrests him immediately.
(It doesn’t take long in the Void at the end of time to figure out that you need to win the other Lokis’ respect by coming up with the most hardcore story of how you got there. Conspicuous weaponry helps too.)
The craziest thing is, if he’d stayed loyal to his few fragile alliances in the Void – the old sentimental Loki and the scary kid Loki and the stupid alligator – he’d have seen that same Midgardian come driving up in a pizza delivery car after all these years. But you can hardly blame him for choosing betrayal. Betrayal was survival; that was always the story.
